Silver Fillings
An inexpensive way to restore a small amount of tooth decay.
Do You Have This
A small cavity (tooth decay) on a back tooth.
The Solution
After the decay in the tooth is removed, a silver (amalgam) filling containing mercury and metal is used to replace the missing tooth structure.
The Advantage
They can be placed quickly and are relatively inexpensive.
The Disadvantage
Silver fillings are very noticeable and contain a toxic material called Mercury. Current studies indicate that the Mercury found in dental amalgams pose no measureable risk to patients. However, mercury has been linked to neurological and kidney disease.
The Alternative
White composite fillings made of plastic and glass that are less noticeable or even undetectable that are bonded to the tooth. If a tooth has lost a significant amount of tooth structure, a crown may be necessary to strengthen the tooth and restore proper form and function.
